I've been working on the game world some more, specifically the Human economy. I've made some progress on a design for hard currency (coins and bills). Expect to see something posted here and on deviantArt in the next few days.

I've also been continuing work on the character creation system. I'm creating a number of related backgrounds so I can hopefully post a couple of sample characters in the near future, followed by an alpha version of the relevant chapters.

(Ortellan chiton) - This hard diamond-like substance is produced by a large marine herbivore. The material is secreted by glands on the creature's head and quickly hardens. It continues to build up and slowly move along the creature's body in plates over the course of several months. Once reaching the end of the creature's back, these plates fall off and can be collected. The material is extremely hard and durable but also extremely difficult to work with. This material is used by craftsmen to produce high quality blades, shields, mirror, and artwork.

White tar is a naturally occurring substance that exists mostly beneath the surface of the planet. It is a combination of a substance similar to black tar (asphalt) on Earth and a white algae-like organism. The organisms in white tar die when sumberged in cold water and only reproduce under high pressure and temperature. After exposure to 'room' temperature for several hours the organisms go dormant and the thick liquid turns into a crusty bark-like substance. Once reheated the material returns to its paste form. This organism is responsible for consuming most organic biomass in the planets crust (resulting in a low amount of petroleum and coal on the planet, such deposits only occur under large bodies of water). White tar only consumes dead biomass, so it is useful in cleaning as it can be easily washed off with water. White tar is often found near the surface within mountain ranges or in rare white tar pits. When used to process gelstone white tar breaks down the material into a thick liquid form. The Melkar use this process to prepare gelstone for sale to other species. Humans have had very little success duplicating this process, but the Lanaaru are believed to have made progress in this area.

In a nutshell, the text from in-progress versions of P2E will be available to registered members. This will allow everyone to get a feel for the rules and the game as a whole. Once a couple more chapters are posted, there should be enough to actually playtest.

Actually, all of the necessary chapter have been considered "finished" at one point in time or another, but some of the more recent changes have required substantial reworks to a couple chapters.

There are currently 5 chapters posted and available in varying states of completion.

Gelstone is a naturally ocurring substance mined from mountain ranges. Similar to a cross between a high-strength plastic and a lightweight stone (comparable weight to particle board), this material is normally rigid and strong (comparable to concrete, but with greater tensile strnegth). It can be converted to a gel through the use of white tar. Once in gel form, gelstone can be stored in a sealed container indefinitely and has a density similar to oil. It can then be poured into a mold and left to dry once exposed to air. It can also be exposed to air for a few hours to thicken and become hand moldable. It will harden completely with approx 72 hrs per 1 foot of thickness.
In its natural form it appears similar to larger crystals of smoky quartz. Once processed into gel and rehardened it becomes a very cloudy brown color with visibility of about 1 inch into the substance. It can be reprocessed, but doing so results in less usable gelstone than before. Dyes can be added to alter the color. Gelstone is mined and processed almost exclusively by the Melkar. The Humans have begun mining the material on a very small scale at one or two sites but have had extremely limited success in processing the material. Damaged gelstone can be repaired or patched by first apply a small amount of white tar and then applying replacement gelstone.

So I decided to transition over to a new design for the website. This is probably the third or fourth site redesign in as many years, but I expect it will be the last one. Switching over to vBulletin should make things much more integrated and be an improvement from the cobbling together of Joomla with a bunch of addons.

Plus, I'm hoping to release the alpha version of the Proteus Core Rules by the end of this year, which should (again hopefully) result in an increase of interest and site traffic. It'll be a lot easier to make the change now.

I'm going to be using the blog to make quick posts and updates on status. This will probably also include ideas under development, both in terms of rules and the game world.

More finished or "official" products will be posted in the form of articles, possibly with a link to the downloads section if there is a file of some sort to be had.

Of course, I encourage everyone to make comments anywhere they are able and to post on the forums. One advantage to VB4 is that significant forum posts can be promoted to show up on the main page.
